Syrah
Syrah budbursts fairly late. Its vigorousness ranges from average to high and its
fertility is low.
The buds of the base rarely blossom so as to give a low yield of about 30hl/ha,
provided that the trimming was done short.
To produce a lot, the most appropriate trimming is the simple or double Guyot
applied on naturally producing plants.
The Cordon de Royat trimming method ensures the best yield control.
Syrah has been recommended in all the provinces within Languedoc.
It is widely grown in tree nurseries and is the 5th rank of all varieties.
20 440 930 graft-vins were planted in 1998.
Syrah gives the best harvest, but it represents a challenge for wine makers.
It was encouraged in the south of France and it notes of "concentration" and "smoked" are
found in many wines of Provence and Aude.
Kept alone as a varietal wine it demands
a careful vinification and if possible, despite its higher cost, to be aged in oak barrels.
