Merlot
Merlot is a sturdy variety. It grows well on land that holds humidity during summer.
Generally, the merlot is trimmed with the Guyot method, but in the south of France
it bears the Cordon de Royat trimming.
It blossoms early. Its aromatic potential is interesting.
Merlot has been recommended in of both the south-east
and the south-west regions of France,
and has become a "trendy" variety.
Within a fews years, merlot ranked the 3rd most cultivated red wine plant grown in France,
after the carignan and the grenache varieties.
Surfaces of merlot were
16 976 ha in 1958,
60 007 ha in 1988 and
96 623 ha in 1999.
The wine is fruity with an intense colour.
It induces smoothness to the blends, and makes the wine also enjoyable when young.
This is probably why so many people have a keen interest in it.
The plant was most likely named after its rich blue-tinged, black, and moive colour.
Its popularity has become so great that you now find Merlot on labels of vins de pays.
