Grenache
Grenache has a history of its own ! Originates in Spain, the wine "garnache"
was first mentioned in France by the poet Eustache Deschamps around 1400,
and yet the ampelographist Jean-Michel Boursiquot underlines that
only in the second half of the 18th century
the variety was really developed in the south of France.
It is well known for its excellent resistance to draught and to strong
winds and it is also recognised as one of the founder varieties of the southern wines.
Surfaces of cultivation increased fourfold recently from 25000 hectares in 1958
to 100 000 hectares in 2000, mostly in the
Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence ranking it as the first red wine plant variety.
"Regarding protection of the Mediterranean identity, the wines of grenache are hard to imitate.
The plant demands a special cultivation "know-how" to handle its vigorousness.
Knowledge of the appropriate soils and the climatic conditions allow the variety
to express aromas of ripe fruits, liquorice, cocoa, garrique,
spices, and to find its balance."
- Jean-Michel Boursiquot.
Grenache is a variety which allows winemakers to express their diversity to the soils.
In Priorat, at a time when wine was declining, the winemakers realised that
the grenache was the symbolic plant variety of the area and therefore concentrated
on it on improving the technics of developing its wine.
It is now highly awarded and Priorat
is recognised as a fantastic wine making region.
The best grenache wines are obtained in poor and stony soils.
Wine reaches a high level of alcohol, above 14°C,
A lively wine with a beautiful red golden brown colour.
Below is a list of our wines that we use the grenache....
