Cinsault
The cinsaut is a southern plant variety.
It is delicate with a regular fertility.
A short trimming ensures yield under 50hl/ha.
This variety is also grown, for the French market, to be eaten as a fruit.
Its suits well all southern provinces as well as in the Pyreenes.
It was studiied in tree nurseries between 1980-88 for a developement of a total of 81,3 million craft-wines.
In 1958 it had a modest importance in the scale of the most grown varieties with only
11176 ha, mainly in the wines the Mediteranean Appellations.
In 1999 its proportion went up to 32007 ha.
When the yield is low, cinsault makes wines of a beautiful colour, with alcohol, offering a pleasant
bouquet of dry fruits (almond, hazel nuts).
In the southern wines based on carignan and grenache, cinsault brings smoothness and harmony by
dampering the alcoholic excesses of grenache and softening the tannins of the carignan.
Below is a list of our wines with their proportions of cinsault...
