Carignan
Carignan holds very straight thanks to lignified shoots, hence its name "hard wood".
It favours the gobelet trim (no wire, the shoots grow vertically like an opened hand)
despite the wind endangers it in Spring in areas where the wind is so strong that its shoots break.
As a result the harvest is lost and the trimming of the following winter is harder.
The damaged branches must be trimmed shorter which can hurt the plant and shorten its lifespan.
Carignan has a late budburst which saves it from early frosts.
Its late ripeness makes it appropriate anywhere else than in Mediterranean regions.
Traditionnally it is grown with the gobelet trim method without trellising on hills.
Carignan remains the most largely cultivated plant in France with 102 317 ha in 1998.
