Where do we come from?
How old is the culture of our vineyard and the vinification?
From the time of "the Osiris Egyptian",
Dionysos the Greek (the greek god of wine),
Bacchus the Roman,
and our old Sucellus for Silvanus from Gaul (ancient France),
we know that our wine culture comes from the most ancient times,
back to and including Uruk and Sumer.
In our region burnt seeds from wild vine were found that date back to 10000 years!
All wild vines where named different to how we know of them today however they were brought together under the title Lambrusque.
Some of the plant types lasted to the 16th century, particularly in Camargue (port of the red sea in line with the Rhone Valley)
where they could grow to 10 metres high along the trunk of oaks and poplars in the form of creepers.
The Lambrusques were moving to the world of global warmings.
Therefore two main areas are known as refuge for vine :
one around the Mediteranean (Spain, Italy, Maghreb shores, and in the middle east)
the other one between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea (Armenie, Azerbaidjan).
At the end of the ice age, the wind moved to the north and we can find the Lambrusques in the south of Sweden.
But there is another difference between wild vine and cultivated vine (vitis vinifera sativa).
The lambrusques grow well in humid climates whereas cultivated vine like dry climate.
Also the fruits of lumbrusque are thought to be too small and too acid for making wine.
So therefore the big question is to know from when and where the grapes which could be used and vinified are located !
We can distinguish three periods since the Bronze age in Gaul.
The time before the Greeks arrival in Marseille 600 BC.
The time of Greek influence between 600 to 300 BC
The time of the roman influence from 200 BC
Here, wine making tradition is not counted in generations but in centuries.
What contributed to make our region a homeland for wine ?
Climate and flora similarities between the south and the Mediterranean world
Trade and cultural exchanges thanks to the Mediterrean sea roads,
Gallo-roman civilisation which lasted for six centuries
Here winemaking tradition is not counted in generations but in centuries.
The vegetal cycle of vine is undoubtedly the same as in the past
(budburst, blossoming, change of colour of the grape berries, maturity, dormant buds and trimming).
Plant varieties evolve and improve like technology.
Vinification is much more supervised these days, and despite our ancient instincts, wine making technics have become more and more accurate.
So where do we come from?
There is another evolution : The one of markets.
At the time of mondialisation and with the influence of the internet,
winemakers now can approach their clients with the necessary tools of global communication. For just with one click you can be viewing the wine makers .
